As a consultant clinical psychologist, with over forty years of practical experience, Dr. Bender interweaves his clinical knowledge with explaining contemporary ideas regarding mental illness and applying them to literature.
He graduated with an M.A. (Hons.) first class in Psychology from Edinburgh University, where he had also studied sociology for two years.
He then worked in the East End, heading up a team of community psychologists. For his pioneering work in developing psychology in the community, he was elected a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.
He has published extensively on groups and on the understanding and treatment of mental illness in works such as David’s Box: The Journals and Letters of a Young Man Diagnosed with Schizophrenia (with Richard Hallam) and The Man with the Worried Eyes: Understanding Dementia (with Rik Cheston) and his more recent A New Understanding of Dementia. These books are available from AgeWise Books.
